iPad 2 Apple on Tablet Alternatives

Tim Cook has only been at the helm of Apple for one day, and already has tried to ruffle a few feathers. Steve Jobs stand-in – possible for good – has finally confirmed that they are working on the iPad 2, and said that other alternatives to their tablet poses no challenge at all. Brave words, but what does he base this on?
He believes that there is currently no decent alternative to the iPad, Windows or Android. The only real contender to the iPad is the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but Cook said that it is an Android OS that has not been designed for use with a tablet device, Pocket-lint reports that Cook said that the Tab is like a “scaled-up smartphone”.

The Apple COO also believes that the bunch of tablets that were seen during CES 2011 still lacked in performance – not sure what he means, the BlackBerry PlayBook certainly looks to have more than enough power? However, Cook could be talking about in comparison to the upcoming iPad 2, as there has been suggestion of a dual-core processor, but not sure on the RAM though.
Mobile Entertainment has covered a piece on a Q&A with Tim Cook, and it was then that the iPad discussion began. He also gave us a little insight into the possibility of other CDMA carriers getting the iPhone – now that would make 2011 the year of the iPhone would you not agree?

Toshiba is gearing up some extra competition for the iPad. Company execs have announced that they will have their own line of tablet computers to launch by early 2011 at the latest.
It seems like a day doesn’t go by where we don’t hear about a new tablet computer being developed. There were definitely plenty of naysayers, and there still are some who don’t believe the tablet will be taken seriously as an essential gadget. According to Fortune, Toshiba’s head of U.S. notebook business Jeff Barney says that ”it has proved to be a mistake to underestimate these new categories.” I’m sure there will still be opposition until we see enough of these devices on the shelves and in knapsacks.

He also argues that the innovation and development of the tablet market is essential right now as “we need new category creation to grow our industry.”
Apple will definitely not have the market cornered at this rate, especially as the Flash feature continues to be a source of debate between those at One Cupertino Drive and the rest of the tech world. Asus chairman Jonney Shih insists a tablet needs “an operating system that runs Adobe’s Flash” and that he can’t believe Apple left that out.
Toshiba’s slate computers could even hit stores as early as the end of this year. That would certainly make the holiday shopping season more interesting.

We’ve seen treadmills with Android tablets built-in and portable Blu-Ray players designed for your cars but does technology really need to invade every aspect of modern life? Apparently Samsung thinks so. The company that’s famous (or infamous) for its cell phones is launching a new WiFi enabled refrigerator—yes, the kitchen fridge now gets the Internets—just in case your weren’t plugged in enough.

The new RF4289 features an 8 inch LCD touchscreen that lets users use apps like Pandora Internet radio, Twitter, and even Epicurious to enhance their kitchen experience. You can also download recipes right to the fridge and even leave notes for friends and family so you don’t have to worry about cluttering up your stainless steel unit with horribly adorable magnets and post-its.
As of yet, there’s no word on any sort of controls or food-related wizardry on the little screen (other than the recipes of course) but this machine is in production right now and scheduled to land in Canada sometime this spring.
Pricing is still up in the air though, but it sure does put those refers with the TV in the door to shame. Though I can foresee a future of greasy fingerprints all over that LCD.
